KOLKATA: It took seven men to unload from a lorry the seven- foot-long fish estimated to weigh 400 kg and haul it to the wholesale fish market in Howrah where it was sold to a retailer for Rs. 16,000 on Thursday. It belonged to the variety popularly called “Bombay Bhetki.”
The mammoth was caught in the Bay of Bengal off Puri on Wednesday and transported, along with other supplies, to the wholesale fish market in Howrah. It drew many curious onlookers.
Ananda Shaw, a wholesale dealer whose family has been in the trade for three generations, said he had never seen a fish of that size. “It was so large we could only estimate, through our experience in handling fish, how much it weighed. There are no measuring scales here to provide us with the accurate weight of a fish of such size,” he said.
