In a cricket-crazy nation like India, it is next to impossible for sportspersons of other disciplines to grab the attention of their countryfolk. But, there have been a select few who have managed to do just that and have managed to get at least a fraction of the adulation that Indians reserve for their cricketers.
Badminton has had the likes of Prakash Padukone, P Gopichand and Saina Nehwal; Tennis has had Vijay Amritraj, Ramanathan and Ramesh Krishnan, Leander Paes, Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi. But, the sport of Chess in India has had a sole flag bearer all these years — Viswanathan Anand. Any lesser mortal would have quaked at the idea of being the sole ambassador for his/her sport, but Vishy with his talent and determination has proved that he is indeed the best!
