Viswanathan Anand — The world’s envy, India’s pride !

A class apart!

In a cricket-crazy nation like India, it is next to impossible for sportspersons of other disciplines to grab the attention of their countryfolk. But, there have been a select few who have managed to do just that and have managed to get at least a fraction of the adulation that Indians reserve for their cricketers.

Badminton has had the likes of Prakash Padukone, P Gopichand and Saina Nehwal; Tennis has had Vijay Amritraj, Ramanathan and Ramesh Krishnan, Leander Paes, Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi. But, the sport of Chess in India has had a sole flag bearer all these years — Viswanathan Anand. Any lesser mortal would have quaked at the idea of being the sole ambassador for his/her sport, but Vishy with his talent and determination has proved that he is indeed the best!

The chess maestro celebrates retaining his World Chess championship title after defeating Vladimir Kramnik in Bonn, Germany.
